What’s the first thing that springs to your mind when you hear the word “donation”? Normally one would associate it with charity; a VOLUNTARY contribution to a cause, organization or some such. Right?
Apparently, that’s not the case in Bangalore schools. To get your kids admitted (to even pre-schools) the authorities DEMAND a DONATION to the tune 1- 4 lakhs. No receipts are issued. What the hell are they taking that amount for even for pre-schools? It’s understandable if there is science and engineering labs to be maintained, computer centers to be developed to provide computing and technical skills etc. But these schools have nothing of that sort. They are under-staffed and even that staff is poorly paid – do they have any incentive to give their 100% to their job – obviously not.
The schools and colleges in the city have turned business – with corrupt business practices. They refer to the students as ‘clients’! No wonder teachers in this country have fast been losing the respect that once they commanded.
With all the new stories we are hearing these days about teachers exploiting and assaulting the innocent students, the situation is further deteriorated and the school management and teachers better get their act together.
I was heart-broken when a guy narrated his tale of woe. He makes less than Rs.30,000 a month. The pre-school demanded a sum of Rs. 1 lakh as DONATION to get his daughter admitted (more like purchase a seat). Is he to compromise the future of his child? Does the greed of the schools owners and management knows no end or do they not understand ethics and morality? To ensure the guy make get his daughter admitted, he will have to invent some malpractice to make that extra money. The cycle just keeps feeding itself. I do know quite a few people who have maxed out their credit cards and don’t give a damn anymore. They have no inclination to pay off their debts. They change their addresses without leaving any forwarding address and whole thing takes a different twist.
Here’s section 48 of the Karnataka Education act –
“48. Fees.- (1) Subject to any other law for the time being in force, no
Governing Council of a recognised educational institution shall levy or
collect any fees or charges or donations or other payments, by whatever
name called, save such and at such rate and in such manner as may be
prescribed.”
In India, the most profitable and economy proof jobs are those of – politicians, school & college owners, police and traffic police…they make hay whether or not there’s sun!
