In some places in India, the tap water brings in plenty of dirt, debris, and other junk (like sand, grit, etc.). This potentially reduces the life-span of the water purifiers (RO, UV, and other cartridges in the unit).
The water condition at our apartment has been a little on the bad side. We had decided to go ahead with the pre-filter in conjunction with the regular water-purifier. Kent charges us close to Rs.400 for a single unit of the pre-filter.
The pre-filter looks like this –

The point is, you get the same filter from other sources for much cheaper. Let the Kent guys not fleece you. Just search for Spun Filter and buy it from any of the e-commerce portals (snapdeal, ebay, flipkart, amazon,…). You might be able to get in the local stores too (like city market and avenue rd. for the B’lore folks). You can get the same product for Rs.50-70 that the Kent guys sell you for Rs.400.
On your part, you’ll need to ensure the dimensions of the filter and the micron specifications meet your needs. For instance, I currently use the 2.5″ dia. and 10″ long Purerite PS-05 filters (5 micron). Both snapdeal and ebay have them is stock for prices lesser than that from Kent –

I haven’t yet found the time to try the local markets here in B’lore., but I am positive I will find them at the much reasonable price. Will update the blog with relevant details when I do find them.
