Sept. 17, 2015. Today is Vinayaka Chaturthi. It’s a day off at offices. Deals are being marketed across retailers. Large number of people are offering their obeisances to the God Ganesha (aka Vinayaka).
Best dish commemorating the occasion – MODAK – is like a dumpling with sweet stuffing of coconut inside. The traditional method of making it is by steaming (and not frying). It’s an awesome sweet if made well. Believed to be the favorite food of Vinayaka.
The Inner Meaning – I’ve never been into much of Indian mythology and representations. However, I do believe the ancient Indians were brilliant and selfless. All the mythologies are replete and pregnant with deep meaning. I prefer delving into them instead of heading off towards the nearest temple by day and shopping mall by night!
Vinayaka has different meanings one of which is one without any nayaka (Vi – without; Nayaka – Leader). That is, Vinayaka is one who is his own leader, he’s his own master. He’s completely in control of his mind and senses. Is not swayed by any “popular opinions.” Is not tempted by any baits.
That’s a Vinayaka. He is shown with an elephant head – a signia of wisdom. Therefore, worshiping Vinayaka should be done to sharpen ones intellect and wisdom. Hence, a proper commemoration to the day would be to involve in activities that furthers our intellect and wisdom. In fact, this day – Vinayak Chaturthi – is celebrated as birthday of Ganesha. Therefore, this day should be thought of as birth of intellect and wisdom in oneself. We should be dedicated to its safeguard and promotion.
Vinayaka has as his vehicle driven by a mouse. The mouse, as we understand is something that rules darkness (another way to view ignorance). Ganesha with his complete control over the mouse, is indicative of the process to hold ignorance in our control.
This intellect and wisdom, once honed and well trained, are the actual removers of the obstacles in our day-to-day life. This is considered one of the characteristic of Ganesha – removing of obstacles.
